Tips For Coping While Recovering From Your Ruptured Achilles Tendon

If you have ruptured your Achilles tendon, you may be dreading the time it takes to get back on your feet. With a possible recovery time of four to six months, you may also be wondering how your are going to be able to cope with the pain, discomfort, and limited mobility. Below are a few tips to help you get through this difficult time.

Keep Your Leg Elevated Whenever Possible

Whenever you are sitting or lying down, keep your leg elevated above your heart. This position keeps the blood from rushing to the affected tendon, making it swell up and become extremely painful.

Not only does keeping your leg raised help with the discomfort, it can also help your tendon heal a little bit faster. If you keep your leg below your heart, the pressure from the blood pooling around the tendon could compress it. This could recreate micro tears in the tendon, leading to a prolonged healing time.

While your leg is raised, the pressure around the tendon becomes lighter. This gives the tissue space to heal correctly without being re-injured on a daily basis.

Whenever you elevate your leg, position the pillow so that it is longways down your leg. This will prevent too much pressure in one area that could cut off circulation. When placing the pillow, keep it a few inches above the tendon so that it does not press on your sore area.

Sleep With A Night Brace On Your Ankle

While you are sleeping, your ankle becomes vulnerable because you cannot control how it will move. You could accidentally bend it crookedly, causing another small rupture in your Achilles tendon. To keep this from happening, wear a night brace on your ankle.

A night brace is an appliance that is custom designed to fit the dimensions of your foot and ankle. It straps on and keeps your ankle from moving while you are asleep. It also prevents the weight of the covers from bearing down on the ankle, causing it to twist.

If you are interested in a night brace, talk to your doctor about being measured for one. They can order one that is designed especially for your foot from a medical equipment company.

Use A Knee Walker To Get Around

Although you will not be able to bear weight on your affected leg for several months, you do not have to be bed-bound. There are several types of equipment available that can help you get around, such as a wheelchair, crutches, or a power scooter. However, one that may be most beneficial for you is the knee walker.

The knee walker provides a cushioned area to lay the knee of your injured leg so it does not have to dangle toward the ground, causing increased swelling. While the knee and calf are supported, your good leg is free to walk while you steer the walker with your hands to move your bad leg around.

If you choose the knee walker from a site like, you can increase the comfort of its use by laying a blanket on the pad to give your knee an extra cushion. You can also extend the knee pad area with a small board wrapped with batting. This can be useful if you have very long legs.

The above tips will provide you with a good starting point for coping with your ruptured Achilles tendon. If you need more ideas or would like to discuss getting equipment like the knee walker, you may want to talk to your doctor. You could ask your durable medical equipment provider for information as well.
